• Some sofas, particularly older ones or those made with specific materials, may contain or have been treated with Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

• These POPs may include flame retardants like polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which were once used for fire safety but are now recognized as harmful.

• Sofas can no longer be mixed with general waste due to their potential POPs content.

• Disposing of materials containing POPs is currently six times more expensive per kilogram than general waste.​
